Tendon and Tempura restaurants are dime a dozen in Singapore, but not all of them meet the quality of prices. Soon-to-be Halal certified NATSU at The Clementi Mall is a different breed as it is not exactly a Tendon restaurant for dine-in, but a takeaway kiosk for a quick Tempura fix.
Unlike some of the other tendon places, NATSU look light and welcoming – the delicate thin batter is light yet fluffy, and comes with a selection of savoury sauces that enhances the flavour.
There are four standard Tendon option on the menu. Customers can also choose to create their own Tendon with a selection of Tempura and Toppings. Add $1.50 if you wish to trade your Rice base for Japanese Soba.
Standard Tendon Menu
- Veggie Tendon and Onsen Egg ($5.90) – Japanese Pearl rice, Onsen egg, Kakiage, Baby French Beans x4, Pumpkin, Furikake, Sesame Cucumber
- Signature Tendon ($6.90) – Japanese Pearl rice, Prawn, Kakiage, Capscium x2, Lotus Root Chips, Garlic Edamame

- Seafood Tendon ($9.90) – Matcha Soba, Prawn x3, Japanese Crab Stick, Pumpkin, Chuka Kurage, Japanese Pickles
The counter provides a nice view of the chef preparing the tempura. You can place your order for the standard Tendon priced affordably from $5.90 to $9.90, or choose from the variety of Tempura and toppings to create your own.
Must try Tempura items include Jumbo Prawn ($3), Jumbo Japanese Crabstick ($2), Chicken ($1.50) and Kakiage ($1.50). Toppings such as Seaweed Corn ($1.50), Marinated Jelly Fish ($1.50), Garlic Edamame are worth trying too; Japanese pickles are included complimentary.
For a nice complement to the Tempura, try some of the Asian-inspired sauces like Salted Egg sauce, Wasabi Mayo and Truffle cream. Newly created local flavours like Rendang Tempura and Satay Tempura sauce will be introduced soon.
NATSU aims to attract crowds with its reasonable pricing and quality fare. The kiosk is located at the basement food hall of Clementi Mall and is expecting to open its second kiosk at Paya Lebar area.
Below is the actual presentation and satisfying portion of NATSU takeaway Japanese Tempura and Soba. The tempura was still crisp after I brought it back home.
