Tucked away in a quiet shophouse on Beach Road, Candour Coffee is a pocket-sized coffee bar that provides a casual setting for informal business gatherings or socializing over gourmet coffee and a tasty selection of Japanese donburi.
Coffee game is relatively strong at Candour Coffee – it features about twenty coffee bean varietals from around the world, so that coffee lovers can sample different types of brews at any given time.
Candour Coffee believes that brewing by hand will always create a more delicious coffee than one that a coffee machine makes, therefore Hario V60 has been the go to method here. For those who prefer the milk-based espresso drinks over brewed coffee, the latte or cappuccino is available, including non-caffeinated beverages option as well.
On the food front, Candour Coffee works with a co-sharing pop-up concept – Boru Boru, that dishes up both classic and contemporary bowls of Japanese rice with seafood, commonly known as Chirashi or Sashimi bowl, priced between $13.90 to $18.90.
Familiar favourites and signature bowls include Boru Chirashi ($13.90) – freshly diced salmon and tuna topped with tako, ebi and salmon roe; Ikura Boru ($18.90) – freshly diced salmon topped with salmon roe.
Try the Shiro Maguro Boru ($14.90) for something seasonal and a little different – the Japanese rice bowl is served with decent slices of seared white tuna with spicy house dressing, onsen egg, tobiko and seasonal vegetables, available in limited portions only.
Boru Boru also offers a selection of modern Japanese rice bowls that adds a refreshing oomph to the experience. Highlights include limited servings of Salmon Boru with Triple Egg ($16.90); Wasabi Mayo Salmon/Tuna Boru; Tangy Yuzu Salmon Boru and the Original Shoyu Salmon/Tuna Boru, priced at $9.90 for petite size or $13.90 for regular bowl.
If you’re again looking for something different, I would recommend the Truffle Somen ($13.90) – the gleaming slices of seafood such as tako, ebi, tobiko and surimi caught my attention at first sight, which travels well with the heady perfume of truffle oil mixed into the chilled Japanese wheat flour noodles.
What’s missing is probably a warm cup of sake to help seal the deal!
If you’re looking for quality, no-frills, and of course, affordable meal, Boru Boru has the best lunch bargain in town. Prices indicated are nett prices, and doesn’t include any service charge and GST.
Boru Boru operates at a strict schedule for lunch on weekdays only, but have recently opened up for dinner from 20th of May 2017 onwards.
