New destination dining restaurants to take a city break in 2017

There is no lack of dining restaurants in Singapore to get impeccable food and service, but sometimes you just want a little more from your meal. The best you can do is to break out of the city’s hustle and bustle – take an escape to enjoy the mystery of nature, embark on a walking trail in the parks and enjoy basking in the sunshine and pleasant weather.

There’s several destination dining restaurants here in Singapore which will have you feeling like you’ve been transported into a divine bubble of bliss. To mention but a few – for a resort getaway, my top pick is Capella Singapore in Sentosa island, offering fine dining options and different culinary opportunities in four unique dining outlets.

For some quayside dining – Museo located in Sentosa island as well offers a magnificent sea view, coupled with a chill-out atmosphere, exquisite cuisine and creative cocktails. For a unique multi-layered dining experience with nature, one-Michelin-starred The Corner House restaurant at Singapore Botanic Gardens certainly won’t disappoint.

Something for the West-siders, UNA at One Rochester; Min Jiang @ One North and Da Paolo BistroBar at Rochester Park offers a tranquil dining experience and delightful cuisines that get plenty of love; while the East-siders can make their weekend count as they unwind at The Coastal Settlement, a casual dining restaurant cum bar that presents the only one of its kind village home-like environment in Singapore.

So what’s NEW in 2017? I have scooped out two exciting new restaurants to escape the city.


THE SUMMERHOUSE – SELETAR AEROSPACE PARK

Residents living in the northern Singapore finally have a new reason to get excited. The recently redeveloped Seletar Aerospace Park (SAP) is the latest dining enclave to explore as it comprises a cluster of black and white colonial bungalows that has been refurbished and then reopened as dine-in restaurants.

The most notable eatery at The Oval@SAP is The Summerhouse, a fine-dining outlet headed by Chef de cuisine Florian Ridder who adopts a farm-to-table concept all in a concerted effort to rethink food sources and reconnect them to people. The cuisine served here is nature-inspired dish up with edible flowers and vegetables and cultivated in their own backyard.

Blending heritage with modernity, The Summerhouse‘s space is ideal for hosting a variety of events, from intimate weddings to birthday parties and social events. The restaurant is managed by 1-Rochester Group which also runs 1-Host, an event planner and other award winning multi-concepts like 1-Altitude, 1-Altimate, Stellar Restaurant and UNA at 1 Rochester.

The first floor of the colonial establishment includes a cafe and bar – Wildseed Cafe, as well as a local floral specialist shop – Poppy.

Poppy offers wedding flowers, bridal bouquets & flower arrangements for special occasions at The Summerhouse. Poppy also retails bouquets of flower poppies to help make your date special and memorable.

Nature-inspired small plates are also featured on the menu of Wildseed Cafe, as it is brought to you by the same folks at The Summerhouse. Expect some mean all-day brunch items like braised beef brisket sandwich, falafel sandwich, cheesy beef balls, and a family-style DIY salad platter that feeds a crowd of eight or less.

Desserts are created by 1-Group Pastry Chef, Jasmin Chew – combining seasonal ingredients with a little creativity and imagination, you have to try the blue tinted pea flower coconut muffin, ginger flower banana loaf and the honey lemon rosemary tart.

THE GARAGE – SINGAPORE BOTANIC GARDENS

Dine in the beauties of nature in a modern setting of a conversed 1920s Art Deco garage within the Singapore Botanic Gardens. The Garage is the second new multi-concept destination dining concept, part of the 1-Rochester Group.

Bee’s Knees located on ground level of The Garage is the perfect brunch spot for families with children and pets. The fun and laid-back all-day dining garden cafe-bistro offers a breakfast menu of eggs, waffles, house-made cereals and cakes, a pizza and pasta menu as well an extensive salad and sandwich menu. There is also an option for children meals.

The cafe is outfitted with varied seating of banquettes, dining chairs and bar stools – organised in social groups, just like a beehive.

The Garage staircase leads you to the upper floor which sits Botanico, a contemporary bistro that features a seasonality-driven menu inspired by the natural cycles of the year and by bistronomy.

The restaurant is spearheaded by Spanish Chef Antonio Oviedo, whom has a diverse culinary background and was trained in world-renowned kitchens including that of the late 3-Michellin starred chef Santi Santamaria and the Roca brothers of El Cellar de Can Rosa.

Chef Antonio incorporates natural, seasonal ingredients into traditional European cuisine, transforming iconic dishes with just a few subtle changes. Each menu item is crafted with the best-quality sourced produce and ingredients to bring out the essential flavors of the product; the well-balanced dishes can be paired with carefully considered drink selections curated by in-house mixologist Ruzaini Hashim at the Botanico Bar.

The restaurant has a spacious outdoor terrace (that provides air-conditioning) and a garden bar, adding to an already relaxed ambiance. The Botanico Bar serves up botanical-inspired cocktail creations like Garage Gin’Onic, Blackberry Lychee Mojito, and Thyme Lemonade.

Diners are welcome to choose from the lunch set menu (2-course $35++ / 3-course $45++) or go a la carte with signature dishes that are available for both lunch and dinner.

Dishes to look forward to include Botanico Salad, Idiazabal Croquettes, Lamb Tartare, Chargrilled Spanish Mackerel and Chargrilled Carabinero.
