Chef Teppei Yamashita’s restaurant at Orchid Hotel in Tanjong Pagar is widely known for its insanely good value and quality Omakase meals at affordable prices. If there was a prize for long waiting list, first place would go to Teppei as diners really have to plan ahead to make reservations – the restaurant is always fully booked. Waiting list usually takes one to three months.

Teppei’s kaisendon is noted to be one of the most popular dishes and is available for lunch – no reservations for lunch though. The highly sought after sashimi rice bowl is also available at the sister outlet; Teppei Syokudo, an express dining concept developed by the award-winning Teppei Japanese Restaurant.

There are presently five Teppei Syokudo outlets – the newest outlet at ION Orchard, offers the same menu which include the best-selling kaisendon, fried items like crab cream croquette, tonkatsu and more. Japanese bento and donburi, as well as a variety of curry rice are available.

Fans of Teppei’s famed Kaisendon could not be more excited as there is a little surprise waiting for them at the new outlet. Diners can customise their own sashimi bowl with the exclusive D.I.Y. Kaisendon Concept – by selecting the size of your sashimi bowl ($8.80 – Small with 2 choices of fish included, $15.80 – Medium with 4 choices of fish included, $19.80 – with 5 choices of fish included).

The variety of sashimi and fishes include salmon, tuna, yellow tail, swordfish, baby scallop, octopus, squid and whelk. Teppei Syokudo’s kaisendon is lightly seasoned, so that your taste buds don’t have a chance to get bored.

While sashimi is the main attraction, it’s easy to get distracted by the potpourri of premium ingredients ($3.80 per portion) like mentaiko, flying fish roe, tamagoyaki, unagi, and toppings ($0.80 per portion) such as sakura fish flakes, tempura bits, edamame, yuzu seasoning. Customers can choose rice or salad for the base of the sashimi bowl – the salad dressing comes in either sesame sauce or sweet onion sauce.

The cuts of sashimi are thick and firm, absolutely pristine and more than enough to carry you through lunch or for dinner. If you are still hungry and craving for more carbs, a glorious selection of deep fried items will be waiting for you.

Favourite picks include the Crab cream croquette, Hokkaido potato, Hokkaido cheese, Hokkaido scallop and Tonkatsu.

For those who may wish to give it a try at the D.I.Y. Kaisendon Concept, visit Teppei Syokudo at ION Orchard at any time of the day.
