Treasures At The Carvery (available 25 January to 22 February 2016)
The Carvery at Park Hotel Alexandra celebrates the Year of the Monkey presenting its first Chinese-inspired Lunar New Year festive offerings, in addition to its already stellar and well-received range of premium meats.
The Carvery will feature two prosperous seasonal roasts specially for the Chinese New Year period – Crackling Pork Belly with Raisin Mustard and Roasted Brazilian Beef Hump. Other seasonal highlights include Duck Confit Rice, Guinness Braised Beef Brisket, Peking Duck Pancakes, and scrumptious staples like the crisp and fluffy Yorkshire Pudding, creamy butter-laced Mashed Potatoes, Corn on the Cob, caramelised Sweet Potatoes and more.
The dessert section will see a new Chinese New Year pound cake made healthy and light with only flour, cream, Mandarin juice and sweet and sour cream cheese kumquat frosting.

For those looking for a toss to an auspicious Monkey Year, The Carvery also offers the perennial Chinese New Year favourite Yu Sheng – featuring the Golden Eight Treasures Yusheng ($38.80 serve 4 to 6 persons) composed of sliced trout gravlax, fried fish skin, fennel, beetroot crisp, seaweed, candied ginger, crushed roasted walnuts, red radish and pickled turnips, draped with honey lemon dressing and crisp tortilla crackers.

This Chinese New Year, Eat At Seven put a new spin on your usual lo hei sessions and unveils five different lo hei each at ENBU, Nigiro Café, MAGURO-DONYA MIURA-MISAKI-KOU SUSHI & DINING and NiKuNoHi.
Tai, or sea bream, is believed to be a fish that brings good luck. Its name recalls “medetai”, which means happy, and its red colour symbolises luck. This Yu Sheng features tai in sashimi cuts. Both the head and tail of the fish are also plated, which symbolises good fortune throughout the year. Choose either the invigorating yu zu or delightful sweet sour plum sauce as dressing.
The Mede Tai Lo Hei goes at S$48 and can serve up to 4-5pax pax. It will be available from 1 February to 22 February 2016. With a meaning that translates to “Dance of Flame”, ENBU offers a dining experience that perfectly complements Singapore’s exciting dining scene. Are you looking for a new lo hei offering after the recent ban of freshwater fish? Look no further than NikuNoHi. NikuNoHi Offers a Chinese New Year Set Menu for the Ultimate Festive Indulgence
Apart from the lo hei dish, NikuNoHi has also come up with a Chinese New Year set menu. The Meat Platter comprises three kinds of wagyu beef; pork belly; and chicken thigh. The Seafood Fortune Pot is a grand offering that includes a medley of fish fillet, clams, scallops, prawns, squids, mussels and vegetables. Cap off the meal with a dessert. Available on the eve of Lunar New Year as well as throughout the Lunar New Year period, this Chinese New Year Set Menu goes at S$128++ (two pax); or S$238++ (four pax).
With a great selection of authentic roast beef and premium meats, this is a mecca for carnivorous eaters. The meats they bring in are a cut above the rest and patrons can select many different parts of the cow in one seating. Its secret ingredient is the east-meets-west marinade, which is used to enliven all its Yakiniku meats. Yakiniku is a Japanese culinary style of cooking small chunks of meat and vegetables on griddles. Each table at the restaurant is fitted with a hot plate. Patrons can huddle together and grill the meats themselves; or, upon request, the chefs will also help to grill the meats.
The must-try dishes include Premium Rare Plate (150g, S$48), which showcases three choices of beef parts. The Tomo Sankaku (Tri-trip) is the best part of lean meat thanks to its wonderful marbling. Kainomi (bottom flap) is the part of the flank breast that boasts a thick sweet layer of fat. Shibire (Veal Sweetbreads), whose taste resembles that of foie gras, rounds out the line-up. Other marquee highlights include Chateaubriand (100g, $$50), which features the best part of the beef fillet; and Japanese Wagyu Tenderloin (200g, S$90), a perennial favourite.

One of the most favourite Japanese izakaya restaurants in town, Tomo Izakaya is where patrons can enjoy a good time with friends and family over exquisite Japanese cuisines. In Japanese, ‘tomo’ means ‘friend’ while ‘izakaya’ translates to ‘staying in a sake shop’. Just in time for Chinese New Year, the restaurant has launched a new Japanese Yu Sheng offering: Abundance Yu Sheng (S$68++). This Yu Sheng can serve four to five pax.
The Yu Sheng features a medley of Boston lobster, salmon sashimi and white fish sashimi (snapper or Amberjack, depending on whichever cut is fresher). Homemade Japanese sauces —goma sauce; Japanese oba leave sauce; and sour plum sauce— will pull all the ingredients together. The plating and presentation of this Yu Sheng is bound to steal attention as well. A freshly peeled orange sits perched on an inverted champagne glass. This is a multisensory treat that will wow everyone at the table.
Apart from the Yu Sheng, Tomo Izakaya is also launching a special Chinese New Year menu. Expect delicious mainstays such as Hokkaido Scallop with Avocado Tar Tar Sweet Perilla Leaf Sauce (S$18). The scallops are fresh and plump, and the perilla leaf sauce adds a dimension of flavours. The Deep-fried King Prawns with Almond Slice (S$28) showcases big, succulent prawns that are simply irresistible. The King Crab Claypot Rice (S$24) and Grilled Duck with Japanese Sour Plum and Fig Sauce (S$20) also heighten the indulgence.

Founded by renowned local pastry chef Daniel Tay, Old Seng Choong offers traditional treats to celebrate every joyous occasion. The launch of this brand is timed to coincide with the coming Chinese New Year festivities; its e-commerce website (www.oldsengchoong.com) will debut on 11 January 2016 with a collection of four goodies – Carrot Cake, Yam Cake, Red Date Cake and Nian Gao.
This eponymous new concept is especially poignant for Daniel, who created it as a tribute to his father, a baker and confectioner himself for over 30 years. It is named after the well-loved Seng Choong Confectionery, which was established in 1965 and run by Daniel’s parents until its closure in 1996.
Taking on an e-business model, Old Seng Choong will retail its food products online, where customers can place orders then opt for self-collection or have them delivered to their doorstep (additional charges apply). Aside from rolling out promotional items for calendar events such as Mooncake Festival, Old Seng Choong will also offer customised special occasion cakes and bakes for celebrations such as babies’ full month parties, and milestone 80th and 100th birthdays.

Red Date Cake 红枣糕 (540g, $23.80) – A testament to Mr Tay Sr.’s philosophy that the only way to do anything is to do it right, this Hong Kong-style red date cake is the result of hours of meticulous preparation. Chinese dates are first skinned, pitted, and steamed with raw sugar. The softened dates are sieved into a smooth paste, which is then mixed with tapioca flour and finally steamed again to form a soft, sticky kueh.
Carrot Cake 萝卜糕 (500g, $23.80) – Whether served steamed or fried, the fragrance of this carrot cake studded with generous pieces of dried shrimp and lup cheong (dried Chinese sausage) is undeniable. To create a cake with more bite, Old Seng Choong uses white radish that is cubed instead of grated. These are steamed till tender before being mixed with premium rice flour.
Yam Cake 芋头糕 (500g, $23.80) – Faithfully-made with a recipe handed down from Daniel’s mother, Old Seng Choong’s peppery yam cake features big chunks of deep-fried tubers embedded in a dense, firm body of rice flour, along with steamed peanuts, dried shrimp, fried shallots and slivers of dried shiitake mushrooms. Thai yams are specially selected for the Old Seng Choong version for their superior flavour and texture.
Nian Gao 年糕 (540g, $23.80) – An indispensable delicacy at any Lunar New Year celebration is nian gao (year cake), a gooey brown sugar confection that signifies good fortune for the year ahead. This rendition is made less sweet – perfect for the health-conscious, and lends itself well to steaming or pan-frying.

Pince and Pints has recreated the traditional Yusheng, by adding chunks of fresh steamed whole live lobster and their own homemade sauce to complete this celebration must-have.
